Ashwagandha's extract derives its strength from a combination of various plant chemicaIs.  It has 12 alkaloids : Alkaloids have documented pharmacological effects and are used in many OTC medicines. Several sitoindosides which are helpful in reducing stress , also 35 withanolides and various other steroidal lactories which have been identified in the roots of Ashwagandha that make it effective as an aphrodisiac, sedative, narcotic, diuretic, debostruent and restorative. Other important compounds that are present in the roots are withancil (an acid), glycosides, dulcitol, and starch, glycine, tyrosine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, alanine and cysteine which are amino acids. Two main types of Withanolides (A and D) are found in the leaves of this shrub. Withanolides are found to exhibit measurable anti-inflammatory properties.
